Review: Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation

I purchased the Healthy Mix Foundation and Concealer when Priceline was having a 3 for 2 sale on a couple of months ago and I am sure some of you must be frustrated that it has taken me this long to do a review (so I am hoping that this will be worth the wait).

I'm not sure how you all approach reviews but for me, it can sometimes take weeks to work out if I like something, let alone if it is benefiting my skin in the way this foundation claims. In the case of this foundation it took more than 2 weeks to work out if I liked it - and I can assure you straight up I like both the Healthy Mix Foundation and Concealer.

Bourjois is one of the pricier brands in the drug store - and they are all pricey here in Australia (with the notable exception of FOA). I have dabbled with this brand many times - usually with eye shadows and blushes but I also like their lipsticks, nail polishes and mascaras. I like their packaging but sometimes (like in the case of their blushes) they can be overly scented. Just a warning in case you don't like scented products.

Just so you know I have pale dry skin with redness across the cheeks and nose so I prefer a medium coverage foundation to even out my skin tone. Despite being dry my skin is easily congested with thick foundations and moisturisers and I am happy to report the foundation and concealer worked well covering my redness without causing any breakouts -hooray!

Packaging: As close to perfect as they make packaging I think - pump bottle that allows you to easily dispense the exact amount you want. It has a clear bottle so you know exactly how much is left and it's plastic - making it nice and light and drop proof. The lid stays on tightly - if only all foundations were packaged so well. A+++ IMO.

Smell: As mentioned above Bourjois like to scent pretty much EVERYTHING, however in the case of Healthy Mix I am in love - it has an apricot/melon scent. This is not offensive given that it is said to contain apricot, melon, apple and ginger. I really don't notice it once it's on but even if I did I wouldn't care because it's lovely.

Texture: The foundation is easily spreadable - I wouldn't consider it watery in any way but it isn't thick either. For dry skin girls this is perfect because I can blend and smooth it out before my skin tries to eat all the moisture and good stuff it contains. It feels slightly tacky once done but give it a minute and you can powder if you need to. I'm not sure this would be a good foundation for oily skin - and I'd be interested in anyone who has oily skin who has tried it.

I have applied this foundation using fingers, brush and sponge and they all work. This is an easy product to apply and easily buildable - I tend to do a second dab over my cheeks without any issues.

Performance against its claims
They say:
I say:
  • I think 16 hours is a bit OTT - but with a primer you would get a good 12 hours for sure.
  • There were days when I felt like complete rubbish and somehow this foundation made me look human again. Call it the fruit therapy or whatever you want, this foundation held up well for me.
  • It does give a natural finish and is very hard to pick unless you've done a crap job of applying it.

Value for Money: The foundation retails for just over $30 AUD and I think it is value for money. IMO it is better than any of the MAC foundations I have tried apart from TECH. In comparison to it's drugstore counterparts it is expensive but it is totally worth it. I have been using mine almost solidly for over a month and I am only half way through the bottle. I wish it had SPF but I am resigned to the fact I need to get my SPF from somewhere else apart from foundations these days. I am also eager to try the 10 hr Sleep Effect one once I am done.

And about the concealer - I like it. Across the board (packaging, smell, texture, value for money) it does well for me. I'm not completely happy with it right up close under my eyes (but that area is very dry and sensitive for me) but it does a great job of concealing redness and I can see why so many people like it. Definitely worth a try if you can get them in a sale like I did.

Anyone else tried this one Bourjois Healthy Mix?

  6. Jen - I think they are worth the try especially on sale. I'd wait for a sale though as they come up often at Priceline and Target.

Makeup Fairy - what type of skin do you have? And so glad someone else loves the smell.

Jade - oh photoready was a disaster. I gave mine to Dee. Nars is a bit thicker which works for my redness but there's not much in them is there?

Priyanka - oh hope it works for you :)

Su - It's the best in the drugstore IMO - quite neutral as well so I think it would work for pink or yellow undertones.

  7. Yay! You're back. I love both of these too, and I'm combination-oily.

I think it has a lot to do with the medium coverage in a light foundation. It doesn't cling to dry spots (good for dry skins and acne prone over healing blemishes) and is relatively long wearing. It does require powdering and blotting, but it's a welcome breather from my Double Wear. (:

The concealer is great on the oily skin around my eyes. I find it creases slightly, but not enough to bother me. It's also great over pimples.

I should probably get around to doing my own review. d:

  11. I use both these products and love them. I've used the foundation for a while now and it's definitely holy grail material for me. I've just started using the concealer but I'm loving that too. I stocked up recently when Bourjois had 50% off - brought the foundation down to $16, total bargain!

  12. Vintage - the concealer is one of the most pigmented I have tried and great for dry skin.

Melinda - always welcome on a band wagon.

Megan - score on the 50% off Bourjois! Now I'm jealous lol.

  13. That foundation is my HG, I would marry if if it were legal. You've summed it up really well, my skin is similar to yours and I adore how easy this is to slap on. It's one of the products I can apply without a mirror, and still ace.
    Sigh.
    Love!
